Going hand-in-hand with the development of the Natadola Marine Resort is the improvement of the indigenous community.

Villagers in Front of Chief's Bure |
The entire Natadola project will eventually enclose Sanasana Village but the developers – with the villagers’ help – have already finalized a master plan to rehabilitate and extend the village.
The first stage of redevelopment should begin towards the end of this year and include the tar-sealing of the access road to the village, extension of the village with the construction of new houses complete with water supply, sewage system and electrification.

The rehabilitation of the existing Sanasana Village will start at the end of 2008 and continue in four stages over a period of six years. In this project, houses will be reconstructed and water supply, sewage systems and electricity installed.
Homes will be built for Sanasana villagers working in the Natadola Marine Resort and a shuttle service will be provided to take them to and from work.

Already, some of the 200-odd villagers are employed in
the various stages of development such as the building of
the InterContinental Hotel and the Vijay Singh-designed
golf course. Once the resorts are operating hundreds more
jobs will be created, again improving the villagers’
standard of living.

The developers are also working with the Sanasana people
to develop Fiji’s first large-scale totally organic
farm which will supply fresh produce to the Natadola resorts.
Experts in organic farming will be brought in from overseas
to oversee the setting up of the farm on the arable land
that surrounds Natadola.
The farm will also create another opportunity for the Sanasana people to be involved in the running of Natadola while at the same time bringing in cash. |
